Why Lulu Hassan is not the Solution for Mombasa

We as a community have always had excitement when a celebrity enters the political dimension. Time and time again the excitement has always clouded our judgment and we end up making wrong decisions.

Let’s take a stroll down the memory lane and go back to 2017. Constituents in Nyali thought that Mohammed Ali would become their savior when they voted him as the area MP. He was vocal in calling out the government of the day for any wrongdoing. His popular KTN Program ‘Jicho Pevu’ was a place every Kenyan turned to get the insights of our corrupt nation.

Fast forward to the present day, Mohammed Ali is regarded as a traitor to his constituents and the people of Mombasa. Not only did he miss the two parliament sittings that saw the under-fire finance bill passed, but he has been an ally of the oppressive Government for the longest time.

Mohammed Ali has been quiet when the government has been abducting people unlike his fellow host John Allan Namu who has continued to call out the Government. This shows betrayal to the people as before getting into politics he was a vocal journalist who always held the Government accountable for its deeds.

Lulu Hassan is no activist or even a political champion, she is a journalist who has invested in filmmaking on the coast. She has offered jobs to several youths in the film industry, a deed which I commend her for. But if that’s the only reason we are championing for her to join the political arena, then as a people we are done for.

That reminds me, during the last elections when Mike Sonko showed an interest in becoming the Governor of Mombasa, the youth were over-excited. The majority believed that Sonko would have been the leader Mombasa needed even though he was impeached as the Governor of Nairobi.

Just like the same youths knew that things would change when Ruto, a youthful president assumed office, something the same people have increasingly grown tired of and have participated in nationwide protests calling for the removal of the same person they thought would bring sanity to this nation.

As a people, we need not let emotions make decisions for us, we need to let our brains decide for us. We need to grow and we need people who won’t be afraid to call out others just because they are affiliated in one way or the other. We need to have sober minds to make Mombasa the city it is supposed to be.
