County Government of Mombasa launches a 10-day campaign against Mugoka 

County Government of Mombasa, has today launched a campaign against the usage of Mugoka  in the county. 
Speaking during a press briefing, Deputy Governor H.E Francis Thoya expressed the Cunty government’s firm stand on mugoka despite intimidation from the National Government . 

“County Government of Mombasa is faced with 9 court cases on this matter, this demonstrates the enormity of the battle ahead. Interests are at play at the expense of the people of Mombasa. However, Mombasa County remains unweaves in its resolve to protect the welfare of our citizens and create a safe drug-free environment for future generations.” Said Thoya.

This awareness campaign against Mugoka will involve the coastal counties such as Kilifi, Lamu, Tana River, Kwale, and Taita Taveta.

According to Thoya, the ten-day campaign has an intense lineup of activities such as awareness programs on the effects of Mugoka on health and socio-economic welfare at the school level, community level, Media talk shows advocacy and visiting rehabilitation centers. This will involve the county government’s collaboration with different stakeholders such health department, education department, religious leaders, and community leaders.

In addition, the county government of Mombasa will support the Drafted Crop Amendment Bill 2024 aimed at removing Miraa as a scheduled crop.

As different counties all over Kenya merge their efforts against Mugoka, the National Government is on a different page as more funds will be directed to improve Mugoka farming.

“This is not a fight in Mombasa but other counties such as Machakos and Easter have also joined the momentum against Mugoka”. President Willam Ruto has been engaging with Western countries such as Meru and Embu on Mugoka and will allocate 500 million Kenyan shillings to enhance Mugoka produce despite the health risks associated with Mugoka affecting our generations.” Stated the Deputy Governor.
